Key changes to Thailand’s visa rules in 2025
Extension of Visa-Free Stay For citizens of the EU, the US, the UK, Russia, and some other countries, the visa-free stay has been extended from 30 to 60 days. New extension system: tourists can now extend their visa-free stay by another 30 days without leaving the country. A return ticket and proof of financial stability (at least 20,000 baht per person) are still required.
New requirements for tourist visas The tourist visa (TR) is now issued for 90 days instead of the previous 60. There is an option for a 60-day extension at the immigration office (previously only 30 days). A health insurance policy covering at least $50,000 in medical expenses is required.
Updates for work visas (Non-Immigrant B) A simplified procedure has been introduced for specialists in IT, medicine, engineering, and other in-demand fields. Companies hiring foreigners are now required to confirm that their salaries are at least 50,000 baht per month. Remote work (digital nomad visa): a new category for specialists working for foreign companies. The visa is issued for one year with the possibility of extension.
Changes for retirees (Non-Immigrant O-A) Retirees are now required to have a health insurance policy with coverage of at least $100,000. The amount required to confirm financial stability has been increased to 1,000,000 baht in a bank account. New requirement: proof of residence in Thailand.
New conditions for investors and entrepreneurs An investment visa is now available for those investing at least 10 million baht into the country’s economy. The business visa (Non-Immigrant B) now requires a registered company with a minimum capital of 2 million baht.
Strict control of visa violations Fines for overstaying have been increased: overstaying for more than 90 days now results in a ban on entry for up to 5 years. An electronic movement control system has been introduced for anyone staying in the country for more than 90 days. Frequent border crossings under the visa-free regime may result in a refusal of entry.
